Virtual Coin Collecting Merit Badge

What: The Merit Badge requirements for coin collecting ensures that any Boy Scout vying for a coin collecting Merit Badge completes certain objectives and goals which teach scouts the value of money, the history of coinage and the many important basics of coin collecting and numismatics.

A PowerPoint presentation will be used to cover minting, terms, grading, proper storage and identifying marks and designs. The second session will be used for presenting their findings and questions/wrap-up. Scouts should be prepared to be challenged and to join the conversation! Participants who do not engage with the class may not receive credit for the badge.

Meet your Counselor - Aaron Santos is an Eagle Scout (2014) from Troop 13, Dartmouth, MA, avid historian and coin collector/hobbyist, with an Associate’s degree in Liberal Arts from Bristol Community College.

WHO: Open to all Scouts BSA members

HOW:  This Merit Badge will be taught in a virtual classroom. The class has a capacity of 15 Scouts. Small classroom size provides all students with the opportunity to share and interact with the counselors and other Scouts. Scouts should be prepared to be challenged and to join the conversation! Participants who do not engage with the class may not receive credit for the badge. Scouts must be prompt for all badge sessions. Late participants may not receive credit for all requirements.

Before beginning work on any merit badge, scouts are to have a discussion with their unit leader regarding the specific badge and counselor.

WHEN: This class will be held virtually over two sessions:

August 4, 2020 7:00PM-9:00PM

August 11, 2020 7:00PM-9:00PM

Scouts must attend both sessions to complete the offered requirements.

After registering, Scouts will receive a link and login information via email the day class is scheduled. Scouts will also receive instructor details that can be used to connect to the counselor on Scoutbook. This assures that completed requirements are easily recorded.

PREREQUISITES:  There are no specific prerequisites, but the following will be assigned between classes:

#3 (show 5 grade examples of the same coin),

#5(use online catalogs and magazines for research and provide examples),

#6 (prepare to show and tell),

#9 (part D is possible during this time, but any part is okay),

#10 (any part is acceptable and virtual tours of facilities are also acceptable during this time) -All prereqs may also be presented at second session.

Scouts can get a headstart on these, if they would like!

Suggested supplies/prep-work for students: The coins needed for requirements which will be discussed, a coin reference catalog and/or a numismatic magazine (both optional), merit badge worksheet
