Virtual Engineering Merit Badge

What: Engineering Merit Badge Objectives: To understand engineering and its impact on society and learn more about the different fields of engineering.

Meet your Counselor - Paul Schofield is an Eagle Scout and current Council Commissioner.  He has a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Rhode Island and is a registered Profession Engineer in Rhode Island.  Paul is a project manager for the RI Department of Transportation and manages many of the State's road and bridge construction projects.

WHO: Open to all Scouts BSA members

HOW:  The Engineering Merit Badge will be taught in a virtual classroom. The class has a capacity of 15 Scouts. Small classroom size provides all students with the opportunity to share and interact with the counselors and other Scouts. Scouts should be prepared to be challenged and to join the conversation! Participants who do not engage with the class may not receive credit for the badge. Scouts must be prompt for all badge sessions. Late participants may not receive credit for all requirements. Scouts must use a device with video to access this class.

Before beginning work on any merit badge, scouts are to have a discussion with their unit leader regarding the specific badge and counselor.

WHEN: This class will be held virtually over two sessions:

August 6, 2020 5:00PM-7:00PM EST

August 13, 2020 5:45PM-7:45PM EST

Scouts must attend both sessions to complete the offered requirements.

After registering, Scouts will receive a link and login information via email. Scouts will also receive instructor details that can be used to connect to the counselor on Scoutbook. This assures that completed requirements are easily recorded.

PREREQUISITES:  Req. 1, 2, 6e, and 9

Lesson Plan: Session 1: Req. 2, 3, 5a, 7, 8,  Session 2: Req. 1, 4, 6d, 6e and 9

Suggested supplies/prep-work for students: None, everything can be down with household items (Scouts are asked to take pictures or videos of what was done to complete Req. 6e to share in Session 2)
