Virtual Safety Merit Badge

 

WHAT - The Safety Merit Badge is geared towards the act of keeping you and your family safe from known and unknown threats inside and outside the home. We will focus on being self aware, becoming good observers thru proper fundamental skills based on offensive and defensive techniques. As well as plan and follow the OODA Loop decision-making process of Observe, Orient, Decide and Act.

MEET YOUR COUNSELOR - Christopher Santos has 27 years of professional EMS experience including 20 years as a Firefighter Paramedic for the town of Bourne, MA. He holds training and operational proficiency in tactical planning, tactical marksmanship, tactical driving, and tactical medicine, among many others. He specializes in developing programs of instruction and presenting to Fire/ EMS, Industrial, and Corrections personnel through within varied environments.

WHO: Open to all Scouts BSA members

HOW:  This Merit Badge will be taught in a virtual classroom. The class has a capacity of 15 Scouts. Small classroom size provides all students with the opportunity to share and interact with the counselors and other scouts. Scouts should be prepared to be challenged and to join the conversation ! Participants who do not engage with the class may not receive credit for the badge.

WHEN: This class will be held virtually over two sessions:

June 18, 2020 6:30PM-8:30PM EST.

June 19, 2020 6:30PM-8:30PM EST. 

Scouts must attend both sessions to complete the offered requirements.

After registering, Scouts will receive a link and login information via email. Scouts will also receive instructor details that can be used to connect to the counselor on Scoutbook. This assures that completed requirements are easily recorded. 

PREREQUISITES: None 

 

Suggested supplies/prep-work for students:

Notebook and newspaper articles, in preparation for requirement 1.

This merit badge requires a lot of writing and discussion. The student should be well prepared to answer questions as it pertains to safety in the home as well as out and about.

Each student will need to do a safety project as it relates to the home, place of worship, school, community or employment.

*** Due to COVID -19 the student may do a virtual safety project based on one of those related topics to include PowerPoint presentation, project overview, outline of your plan, drawings, notes, course of action (Action Plan), Worse Case scenario, cost/funding if needed for the project.
