Virtual American Labor Merit Badge

What: Join the Museum of Work & Culture as we explore the history and significance of the American Labor movement. We will learn about the circumstances that lead to unionization, the purposes of unions, andmthe relationships between management and labor. This will include hearing from a union member and a labor/management negotiating activity.

Meet your Counselor - Sarah Carr is the Assistant Director of the Museum of Work & Culture, where she manages all of their educational outreach and public programs. She has spearheaded the Museum’s inclusivity initiatives, expanding their all-ability program for students with autism, launching programs for individuals with memory loss and dementia, and improving access for the visually imparied. She has led merit badge classes for American Heritage, American Cultures, American Labor, and Disabilities Awareness for four years.

WHO: Open to all Scouts BSA members.

HOW:  This Merit Badge will be taught in a virtual classroom. The class has a capacity of 20 Scouts. Small classroom size provides all students with the opportunity to share and interact with the counselors and other Scouts. Scouts should be prepared to be challenged and to join the conversation! Participants who do not engage with the class may not receive credit for the badge. Scouts must be prompt for all badge sessions. Late participants may not receive credit for all requirements. Scouts must use a device with video to access this class.

Before beginning work on any merit badge, scouts are to have a discussion with their unit leader regarding the specific badge and counselor.

WHEN: This class will be held virtually over two sessions:

June 8, 2020 3:00PM-4:00PM EST.

June 11, 2020 3:00PM-4:00PM EST.

Scouts must attend both sessions to complete the offered requirements.

After registering, Scouts will receive a link and login information via email the day of scheduled class. Scouts will also receive instructor details that can be used to connect to the counselor on Scoutbook. This assures that completed requirements are easily recorded.

PREREQUISITES:  None

Suggested supplies/prep-work for students: We have a printable booklet that focuses on just the requirements that we will be covering. We would  like this shared ahead of time. We would also have a job description packet for the final requirement that we would share.
